Segregation in New Allopolyploids of Gossypium. II. Tetraploid Combinations.

چکیده
N two other papers in this series (GERSTEL 1956; GERSTEL and PHILLIPS in prep.) I the segregation of artificial hexaploid combinations was described. These had been obtained by crossing tetraploid New World cottons with diploid Wild American species and subsequent doubling of the chromosome number. For certain characters these hexaploids were of duplex genotype (i.e. of the type ZZzz). Segregation occurred in the crosses with recessive testers, yet the resulting ratios were wider than the 5:l ratio expected from random chromosome association. The results were interpreted as due to weakly preferential associations at the prophase of meiosis between chromosomes derived from the same parent species. The present paper deals with allotetraploids synthesized from various diploid members of the genus. These were either taken from the same section as in the cases of 4n(G. arboreum X herbaceum) and 4n(G. thurberi X raimondii) or from different sections as in 4n (G. arboreum X anomalum) and 4n(G. arbmeum X thurberi). In several instances, it was possible to compare the segregation ratios for factors located on different chromosomes.

Segregation in New Allopolyploids of Nicotiana
G ENETIC segregation in synthetic allopolyploids of the genus Gossypium has been described in several earlier papers by the author and his colleagues (see GERSTEL and PHILLIPS 1958, for a summary). We had found in that genus that allopolyploids produced from two very closely related species segregated like autopolyploids, i.e. they gave approximately 5: 1 ratios for crosses of the duplex type Z...

gation of parental characters in allopolyploid Aquilegia showed that flower color segregated while other characters did not. This segregation was assumed to result from heterogenetic pairing of chromosomes since about one to two quadrivalents per cell were observed. Segregation in an allopolyploid of Bromus ciliatus x B. laevipes also reflected a high amount of multivalent pairing ( JAKOB 1952)...

Polyploidy is an important evolutionary process in plants, but much remains to be learned about the evolution of gene expression in polyploids. Evolution and expression of the 18S-5.8S-26S ribosomal gene family was investigated at homeologous loci in the Glycine subgenus Glycine perennial soybean polyploid complex, which consists of several diploid genomes that have formed allopolyploids in var...
متن کاملA general polyploid model for analyzing gene segregation in outcrossing tetraploid species.
Polyploidy has played an important role in higher plant evolution and applied plant breeding. Polyploids are commonly categorized as allopolyploids resulting from the increase of chromosome number through hybridization and subsequent chromosome doubling or autopolyploids due to chromosome doubling of the same genome. Allopolyploids undergo bivalent pairing at meiosis because only homologous chr...
متن کاملNew World tetraploid cottons contain Old World cytoplasm.
New World tetraploid cottons (Gossypium spp.) originated through hybridization of ancestral diploid species that presently have allopatric ranges in Asia-Africa (the A genome) and the New World tropics and subtropics (the D genome). Despite intensive study, the identity of the parental diploids and the antiquity of polyploidization remain unresolved. In this study, variation in the maternally i...
